What's On This Month

Please read the exciting news below about the launch meeting for the Tattenhall & District U3A Group!

U3A Group

U3As are democratic, self-funded and self-managed organisations which exist to provide education and leisure activities for men and women, no longer in full time employment (and not intending to return to full time employment), at minimal cost.   They draw upon the knowledge, experience, skills and enthusiasms of their members to organise interest groups, in accordance with the wishes of the membership.  U3As offer a vast range of subjects in such diverse fields as:  art, foreign languages, music, history, gardening, crafts, archaeology, astronomy and computing.   They also offer activities such as walking groups, luncheon clubs, bridge groups, scrabble, singing for pleasure and line dancing.   The possibilities are endless!

Anyone in the third age can join U3A.  No qualifications are required and none are given.   The Third Age Trust is the national representative body for the U3A movement in the UK (Reg. Charity No. 288007) providing a wide range of support services to the U3As.  (www.u3a.org.uk).

There will be a public meeting regarding Tattenhall & District U3A on Thursday, 25th March at 2pm
in the main hall at the Barbour Institute, High St, Tattenhall CH3 9PX.  Please do come along and find out more about it and hopefully you will register your interest and enable us to launch this new group.   Everyone is most welcome, particularly those from surrounding villages.

Thursday 18th March

Some movies have the knack of arriving at the most painfully right time. Just as Damian McBride's blood is being Dysoned off the carpet at No 10 and Derek Draper's fingerprints removed from the Chequers dining table, here comes Armando Iannucci's horribly brilliant comedy about this government's culture of spin and muddle, using characters first aired in the TV show The Thick Of It. It is a satirical, cynical nightmare on the subject of the run-up, or blunder-up, to the war in Iraq, complete with the nastiest of PR attack dogs and the dodgiest of dossiers. It conjures up a compelling backstairs political world of anxiety and incompetence, bullying and humiliation.

The British Prime Minister and the American President have decided to fight another war, only this one will much quicker.  The idea to go to war does not go down well with US General Miller (James Gandolfini) and UK Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster (Tom Hollander). However, when Simon accidently backs the war on live TV, he finds he has a lot of friends in Washington DC.

Simon and his one-man strong entourage in the form of Toby (Chris Addison) have to try and prevent the country going to war again. This involves Toby sleeping with an intern (Anna Chlumsky), and preventing the PM's chief strategist from rigging a UN vote. The last of these tasks will be particularly difficult, as the chief strategist is none other than the most foul-mouthed Scotsman in politics - Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi).

"Shoo Shoo Baby"

Sunday 7th March at 7.30pm
at

 Bickerton Village Hall

The effortlessly funny double act returns to the stage to heroically perform ‘The Entire History of Cabaret’ in just 90 minutes!  The Shoo Shoos whirl the audience breathlessly past the spectres haunting Cabaret’s past. The journey begins in the Belle Époque Paris, rattles through the gloomily decadent Weimar Republic, hurtles across the Atlantic to the Cotton Club and ends with their macabre opera parody Benjamin Britten’s Got Talent.

Tattenhall Community Association are jointly hosting this show with Bickerton; tickets available from 01829 771442/771649 or from Village Greens.
