For some time, it has been the wish of your Parish Council to replace the much loved, but worn out, village centre sign. This is it! But what does it all mean? The topmost ring is representative of a “Terret Ring” found in the area of the Rookery and which dates back to the late Iron Age of the 1st Century B.C. It is rare, and was part of the saddle used by the Celts of that time on their chariot horses. Below that, we have the flag of St. George, and the Rose of England to represent our national pride. Then we have the sword of the Tatnall Family, from whom it is believed that we either took our name, or they took theirs from the village. The centre is of St Alban’s Church, the ecclesiastical centre, and probably the oldest building of our village, and which we are led to believe was also the site of a Roman villa, representing the present and the past of our village settlement. Then there is the Elizabethan house, also representing our history and the village’s built environment. The batsman represents sport in village life, and the man with his pig represents the artistic side. The office block and the machinery driving wheel is to recognise business in the village. The Remembrance Pillar represents those who gave so much to let the village be as it is today. Then we come to the sheaves of corn that surround the pole, representing the historic County of Cheshire, along with the squirrels that are representative of our fine Primary School. Then, and finally, the cow and calf, representing our large and very special rural and farming area. This is an opportune time and place to express the villages thanks to all those who have been so generous with their help in this work. Andrew, Merle and Ben Smith for its design, creation, erection and for getting us where we are. T.G. Group (Ellesmere), for generous donation of the concrete that we cannot see, but which makes it all safe and sound. MJR Plant and Groundworks Ltd., from Newton-by-Tattenhall, for the excavation work, and to Wrightway Plant Machinery from the Wirral, for the loan of equipment. Finally, to Cllr. Doug Haynes, who took the lead for the Parish Council and project managed the whole scheme for the benefit of our community. To everybody, the thanks of all of us go out.

Village Sign was unveiled on 27 April 2009 by **********
Local Business Page ‘Films at the Barbour’ (or FAB) is on once again this month (see details below). These are social evenings (or afternoons) where you can have a chat with your friends and neighbours whilst enjoying some of the fare available to buy such as ice-creams, popcorn, sweets, soft drinks and alcohol (for the over 18s only!). We hope to have different films in the programme, some of which will be suitable for younger people as well as those for adults. The more popular they prove to be the more we shall show!! It is a good idea to try watching more unusual films of different genres to widen your horizons. Please write down your suggestions of types of films you would like to see and drop the list into the suggestion box in the foyer of the Barbour Institute.
